Whittier, Los Angeles County
Quakers founded Whittier in 1887 and named it for the poet John Greenleaf Whittier, who never visited but wrote a poem for the town. The college they started still occupies the hill above Uptown. Richard Nixon grew up in the area and graduated from Whittier College in 1934, playing on the football team known as the Poets.
